Phase Change Materials

Phase Change Materials absorb and release thermal energy in the process of melting or freezing.  In everyday life, the most commonly encountered PCM is water ice.

As PCMs freeze, they release large amounts of energy, relatively, as latent heat of fusion or energy of crystallization.  When PCMs melt, they absorb significant amounts of energy (heat) from their immediate environment.

At Bergad, we incorporate phase change materials into our foams and gels in order to wick heat away from the source.
